What Is The Real Cost Of Smoking In Missouri?

Smoking is an unhealthy and expensive habit, and many people might not realize the size of the financial toll.

Most people — smokers or otherwise — are aware of the health risks of smoking. Tobacco use is the leading cause of lung cancer, according to the American Lung Association, and smoking-related illnesses have accounted for millions of deaths since 1964. The habit can also heighten the risk of developing severe symptoms of COVID-19.

WalletHub, a personal finance site, broke down the the real cost of smoking state-by-state, plus Washington D.C.

“Every year, smoking costs the U.S. more than $300 billion, which includes both medical care and lost productivity,” according to WalletHub. “Unfortunately, some people will have to pay more depending on the state in which they live.”

WalletHub researchers examined the “true per-person cost of smoking,” and calculated potential losses linked to smoking and second-hand smoke, including costs of cigarettes, health care expenses and more. The aim was to "encourage the estimated 34.2 million tobacco users in the U.S. to kick the dangerous habit."
