REDMAN: What Happened With How High 2

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • The original How High was a cult classic but that doesn't mean it makes sense to cast the same stars nearly two decades later.
  • This is why it's really important to try and own the rights, publishing, masters, etc. on whatever you're involved in.
  • Back when they signed the deal, they likely didn't anticipate a sequel -- they were probably just excited to do a big Hollywood movie. And they probably didn't have much leverage, since they weren't really established in Hollywood.
  • Meth has gotten a lot of big movie and TV roles since -- why wouldn't they want him?
  • They're trying to attract a different demographic -- the youth. How is making a movie with two nearly 50-year-old rappers going to do that?
  • Redman has admitted he doesn't mess with edibles, and this whole movie is about entrepreneurs selling brownies and the like. It would have been bad casting.
  • Then again, Yachty has said that he hasn't smoked in years.

The veteran rapper says he doesn’t have any hate toward Lil Yachty and DC Young Fly, since they're just "seizing an opportunity." He says his gripe is that the production companies seemingly went behind his and Method Man’s backs while both rappers thought a sequel starring themselves was still in development.

Red argues that it doesn’t really make sense to use an established brand like How High without the stars that made it what it was. He says that he and Meth were working with Universal on a sequel and had even picked some writers to do the screenplay. After a table read, execs asked for some changes, but after that, “a branch that’s under Universal decided” to shoot the movie. And because of how the deals were set up, neither of the original stars have the right to the film's name. He says he and Meth were shocked when they started getting calls out of the blue that MTV had picked up How High 2 starring Lil Yachty when they were still waiting for a new script to read.

He says they were ultimately offered some sort of roles in the sequel but turned them down because of how things transpired.

Musically, Red and Meth are working on Blackout! 3, with plans to work on another movie that he says they’ve “been sitting on” since the original How High hit theaters.
