TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Not sure what China would do with the data collected from the vast majority of TikTok users.
  • I don’t know about the data, but it does seem like TikTok, as well as other social media apps, are designed to make people less productive and possibly less intelligent.
  • Other social media apps are also collecting data, but they’re in the U.S., so they’re not deemed as big as a threat to the U.S.

In a grueling approximately five-hour session, members of a House panel grilled TikTok’s CEO about the video app and the possibility it’s sharing data collected from millions of American users with the Chinese government.

Shou Chew, the CEO of the video-sharing app owned by Chinese internet company ByteDace, fielded questions from Republican and Democratic lawmakers on whether TikTok is spying on U.S. users for the Chinese government.

Chew insisted that “ByteDance is not owned or controlled by the Chinese government. It is a private company.”

Lawmakers seemed unconvinced.

Lindsay Gorman, head of technology and geopolitics at the German Marshall Fund and a former tech adviser for the Biden administration, said, “The future of TikTok in the U.S. is definitely dimmer and more uncertain today than it was yesterday. It’s not just one side of the aisle clamoring for TikTok to address these national security concerns, but this is now coming from all sides.” (The New York Times)
