The Weeknd said that After Hours will be receiving a follow-up.
“If the last record is the after hours of the night, then the dawn is coming,” he said.
The WeeKND took to Twitter to tease a new project on the horizon. “Now just piecing it all together,” he hinted on Twitter on April 27, “it’s so beautiful.”
The Weeknd’s signaling of new music comes after the Grammys announced a major change to future award shows.
The Academy announced changes to the list of rules to “reflect its ongoing commitment to evolve with the musical landscape” and “ensure that the Grammy Awards rules and guidelines are transparent and equitable.”
The decision to remove the nomination Review Committee came after The Weeknd dragged the secret committee after being asked to perform at the show but not receiving a single nomination for the most commercially successful album of the year. The Review Committee are groups of “15-30 highly skilled music peers who represented and voted within their genre communities for the final selection of nominees.”
“The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…” The WeeKND tweeted after the 2021 nominations, and boycotted The Grammys indefinitely. "Because of the secret committees I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”
Harvey Mason Jr., chair and interim president/CEO of the Recording Academy, Said he understood why The Weeknd was disappointed.
“I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration. We were thrilled when we found out he would be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl and we would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before,” Mason Jr. said.
When the 2021 GRAMMY Award nominations were announced, the world was shocked that The Weeknd was snubbed from every single category despite having one of the top-selling albums of the year and one of the most critically acclaimed with the lead single, "Blinding Lights".
The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" spent a full year in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
2020, was The Weeknd's year as "Blinding Lights" reached the top of the charts and stayed in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 for an entire year!
The first artist to ever reach this accomplishment, he said it was his fans who deserve the credit for helping him reach this milestone.
"After Hours was always meant to be a very personal project. It's a story I had to tell," The Weeknd said. "The fact I've been able to tell it with the world listening is incredible. This Billboard chart record is truly a result of the fans. I'm so humbled and forever grateful to them."
"Blinding Lights" has 1.1B audio and video streams combined and 726K downloads sold across the U.S., BUT wasn't announced as a nominee for the Grammys.
